The cost of laser cutters is coming down.  $3000 will get a basic
system.  3D printers are now less than $1000.  With interest in laser
cutting rising, and the cost of key components like the laser coming
down, the cost of a "home" system may be in that same range in a few
years.

Resources available online and in the "Maker" community could allow
someone with basic metalworking and woodworking skills to make one on
their own.
