Seeburg L Wiring

Greetings!  I have a Seeburg L that has apparently been well-loved
over the years.  It's certainly been well used -- it's been converted
to 25-cent play, it has a 'modern' Westinghouse motor, a new coin box,
and who knows what else!

The wiring needs attention.  The insulation on the line cord as well
as some of the wires in the interior is brittle and flaking off.
Currently (pun intended!) the line cord enters the cabinet and splices
with the lights (always on when plugged in).  The motor is also spliced
in but the hot line (maybe, it's hard to say) is switched via another
wire(s) from the coin accumulator.  All the connections are (were)
within a giant wad of friction tape.

I'm wondering how the wiring was set up from the factory.  Is the wad
of tape typical of Seeburg?  I'm hoping not.  How should it be done?

Also, I'd like to use a modern cord with a molded plug.  What's the
best practice regarding the ground wire (there isn't one at present).
