New O-Roll Arranged by Steven Kent Goodman
By George Bogatko

Greetings, I'm writing y'all to let you know how much I am thoroughly
enjoying listening to Stephen Kent Goodman's new O-roll, "Slow Drag
Blues," over and over again. The machine I'm playing it on is only
partially complete -- no xylophone, so-so expression mechanism -- but
it just doesn't matter. The roll starts off like a jolly explosion of
real rockin' blues, and just keeps on going.

Your favorite artists are here -- Jimmy Blythe, Clarence Johnson etc.
-- but Steven has added some other artists like Jelly Roll Morton and
Clarence Williams. The story is that he had the last five tunes of
roll O-673, the first five having disappeared. So, he added five new
tunes to the front -- "added" being arranging the missing titles from
original phonograph records and sheet music.

Well, he nailed the Chicago Capitol sound. You don't notice much
difference between the first five and the last five. The whole thing
just rolls along getting better.

I could keep going on and on, but you can hear samples yourself. Just
go to his music site http://www.Gnaw-Vol-ty.com/ and navigate to

You can also hear samples (whole tunes) as played on Rick Crandall's
Coinola SO -- about as authentic as you can get.

Buy it -- it's well worth it!
