Standard Pneumatic Nightmare: Valve Facings
By Skip Downing

As my headache (or learning experience) continues I have discovered
another potential problem -- it appears the previous restoration
included a whole new set of primary valves, and they appear to be
very randomly regulated.

My first concern is the vacuum valve face. The 'leather' in the
valves appears too shiny to be just patent leather. It looks like
the 'Corfam' that my Air Force dress shoes came with in 1981. It's
some kind of plastic coating that doesn't require polishing.

On close inspection it appears that the outer edge of the faces has
curved just a tad, resulting in the valve face being convex on the
outer 1/16- or 1/32-inch. Has anyone else found this?

I'm thinking that what with the slight warping issue, and the random
adjustment issue I might be better off digging through my dead
actions to find a set of untouched Standard valves and rebuilding
those. Any thoughts? All advice gladly received.
