Converting Music Rolls to MIDI Files
By Dave Burritt

I am in the process of converting a nickelodeon built by Ragtime
Automated Music to MIDI control. My first problem is finding MIDI
music for this thing. There doesn't appear to be any. Therefore,
I am in the process of converting my existing rolls to MIDI files.

I am using a $20 web cam to make a video of the roll as it goes
over the tracker bar. I am then using a program which uses
optical recognition to read the holes and record the timing as
they go over the tracker bar and then create a MIDI file. I
confirm the data is okay by then playing the MIDI file on the
Mac GarageBand app.

I don't know if this is how other people do it or not but it
appears to be doing a decent job. If you want more information
then feel free to reach out at me via the contact page at

Thanks,
Dave Burritt
