Converting Music Rolls to MIDI Files
By Wayne Finger

Thanks to David Burritt for his post in 190212 MMD about creating
MIDI files from music rolls by analyzing a video of the roll playing.
It seems like a great way enjoy all sorts of music rolls. It also
might be able to preserve the music of rolls for obscure instruments
or for rolls so brittle they may only be played a few more times.

There aren't many nickelodeon roll scans I am aware of. There
are some nickelodeon "A" roll scans at Terry Smythe's website,
http://www.terrysmythe.ca/ However, your nickelodeon probably
plays "G" rolls, so your video scan idea is a good approach.

I am also interested in converting music rolls to MIDI files using
a camera and computer video analysis. I have tried a program named
"Unroll" that runs on Python language, but never got it to run. I am
now looking at one named, "PlaySK Piano Roll Reader", which runs in
C++. Can you advise what software you are using and keep us posted
on your progress?

Thanks,
Wayne Finger
