Musical Box Gamme Number
By Matthew Caulfield

Rick, I saw your question about gamme numbers in today's MMD.
You will probably get more authoritative answers from musical box
experts, but my understanding of the term "gamme number" is that
it refers to the number assigned to the program or tune listing
that is used on a musical box. I suppose the gamme number, if one
is given, appears somewhere on the tune sheet in the box.

Apparently Nicole Freres was a big user of gamme numbers (hence
the French term), because they had a large number of standard tune
repertoires that they used on their boxes. I suppose that not all
musical boxes showed gamme numbers because if a certain set of tunes
was put together for just a one-time use, there would be little point
to giving that particular program a gamme number.
