Accenting Holes in Piano Rolls
By Jase Haysom

Hello, I was fortunate enough to pick up an Erlebach & Gershwin
Universal Song Roll at the local Op-Shop (a second-hand charity shop).

Universal Song-Roll 2205
Ain't You Comin' Back to Dixieland? (Whiting)
p.b. Erlebach & Gershwin [July 1917]

The roll has additional hole patterns -- groups of two small holes --
near each edge. Please refer to attached images.

Can someone tell me the purpose of these extra holes?

Regards,

[ The tiny holes ("snake bites") cause brief note accents in pianos
[ fitted with Themodist or Solodant systems, and also with certain
[ reproducing systems such as Duo-Art. I'm curious when the system
[ was developed and who held the patent. -- Robbie
