Converting a Piano Roll to a Musical Score
By Wayne Finger

Regarding Jerry McBride's question [200608 MMDigest] about
converting a piano roll to a musical score. The easiest way to
accomplish this would be to:

1. Make a video of the roll as it plays on the instrument.

2. Translate the holes in the roll from the video into MIDI using
the software named Virtual Roll Reader (VRR).

3. Translate the MIDI file into sheet music using the software named
SmartScore.

I have used VRR to make MIDI files of many music rolls and it does
a very good job. At high FPS rates it is very accurate.

I have used Musitek SmartScore to read sheet music and convert it
to a MIDI file. Since it did well at that, I assume it would do
well going back from MIDI to sheet music also.
