Playing the English Steck Half-Duo-Art
By Randy Hayno

I've been working on my Steck Half Duo-Art, pedal only. The piano
is German, and the player action is English made. It was partially
restored in the 1980s and I rebuilt the stack.

I have questions for anyone who knows more about this piano than
I do, which is very little; I cannot find any info for this system.
I'm interested in 88-note operation.

How does this piano operate when you turn the Duo-Art switch to "Off"?
I was hoping that the expression regulator would be bypassed but that's
not happening. It's regulating the playing, so using your feet to add
expression is very difficult.

It's easy to pedal and plays well, but it's obvious that you are
fighting the expression regulator when you try to add accents to the
music. It seems to be playing at zero intensity all the time.

My question is, what is supposed to be happening when you play an
88-note roll with Duo-Art switched off?
