Passing of Arthur Cunliffe, Musical Box Registrar
By Laurence Fisher

The passing of Arthur marks a very sad moment in the modern history
of mechanical music. His legacy of tenaciously-detailed recording of
box details bared all the hallmarks the very best archivists should
look to.

I always enjoyed greatly our many chats on the phone -- his soft
rounded voice, never cross, never sour and always having time to
discuss gamme numbers at length, albeit within compressed calls due
to his health.

I will never forget, when I often submitted a list of box details from
the auction cataloguing I would be doing, the excitement in his voice
when receiving a gamme and serial he didn't have: "Ohhhhhh, lovely,
I don't have one from that number-decade!"

All the times he helped so many from all over this continent and
further afield, not because he needed or was told to, but because he
wanted to.

This is the time for all members of the mechanical music family to
stand together and remember not only Arthur's work and legacy, but
also be so very proud of the huge privilege it was to have known him.
His honour and memory will never be overlooked.

Like many others, my thoughts and prayers I send to his family.

Laurence Fisher
