With fine control of the solenoids' timing and power, the piano can selectively play notes to mimic a human voice. A clear acrylic case reveals the action inside the upright piano. Former NASA engineer Mark Rober builds fascinating engineering projects for his YouTube channel. In this video, he explains the history and engineering design of the keyboard mechanism. He also talks about the difference between vacuum operated player pianos and modern solenoid driven pianos. Joel Shprentz [ "This piano speaks English!" Mark Rober adds, "We had to modify [ it so it could play "Rush E" and all the keys at once otherwise [ out of the box they can play about 30 keys at once."
