Barrel Organ Crank Handle
By Jean Nimal

Dear all, Phil Dayson asks why are the cranks in 'C' shape?
I asked this years ago to someone involved in mechanical music.
Who? When?

I was told that it was a wrong interpretation of the idea that
"the longer the lever arm is, the lighter is the effort." Can we
believe that?

Another idea would be that this shape allows a trimming of length of
the lever arm by bending but it seems also wrong as the cranks were
forged most of the time at the beginning of organs, which is not the
beginning of cranks. This particularity is also seen on the cranks of
"coffee grinders."

Anyway, I won't complain about that because I find them much more
elegant with this 'C' shape which leads to wealth, generosity and
... rotation.

Best regards,
Jean Nimal
