Things are looking up for the piano roll collector community
regarding the availability of recuts. Keystone Music Roll Co. is
back in production, Tim Baxter and his Meliora Music Rolls continue
to offer high quality recuts of various formats and now we have the
arrival of Charlie Morgan's Speakeasy Music Rolls located here in
San Diego, California.
Speakeasy has presented the opportunity for me to once again offer
brand new archival quality Ampico recut music rolls. Our specialty
is offering rare and seldom seen titles along with original unissued
trial copies and new creations. Each roll is $23 plus $6 shipping
for the first roll. Shipping on additional rolls is $0.50 each. Here
is the first list:
1) 202841 The World Is Waiting For The Sunrise, Fox-Trot, Seitz
p/b Edgar Fairchild. This classic, played by almost every banjo band
in the USA, was also available as a ballad on Ampico. Here is the
Fox-Trot version.
2) 204551 How My Sweetie Loves Me (She Loves Me All The Time),
Pollack-Coots p/b Henry Lange. The rolls by Henry Lange are well played
in his unique style. Original rolls by him are seldom found.
3) 204941 She's Everybody's Sweetheart (But Nobody's Gal), ft Conrad
p/b Reichenthal. Another obscure, toe tapping Fox-Trot.
4) 208731 Slow River, Fox-Trot by Schwab p/b Adam Carroll. A great roll
-- I've never seen a recut of it before.
5) 207291 Tentin' Down In Tennessee, by Woods p/b Henry Lange. Another
excellent roll from Henry Lange. Once again, originals are seldom seen.
6) 52434 Croquis et Silhouettes, by Schutt p/b Clarence Adler. An
early reviewer said this of Edward Schutt: 'offers a distinctive voice
that bridges Romantic lyricism and early modernist color.' That is
a good description of this piece. Another very seldom seen roll.
7) 54673 I Set Sail From Holland and The Merry Tavern, by Roentgen p/b
Blanche Goode. Written by the German-Dutch composer Julius Roentgen, it
starts with the stately opening piece 'I Set Sail From Holland' then
finishes with the jaunty happenings of 'The Merry Tavern'. In over 45
years of collecting only one original copy has turned up so far.
8) 57403 Minuetto by Haydn p/b Carl Friedberg. There are very few pieces
by Haydn on Ampico which is unfortunate for such a fine composer.
9) 64983 Weiner Tanz (Vienna Dance), Friedman-Gartner p/b Julius
Chaloff. Expertly played by pianist Julius Chaloff. He brilliantly
captures the spirit of the Viennese dance with its lilting rhythms.
He was very involved with the coding of his rolls for the Ampico and
it shows in this expressive performance.
10) 68161 1. Brises (Breezes), by Schmitt 2. Etude De Concert, by
Moszkowski p/b Williams. You could say that this is an odd coupling
of pieces by two very different composers. Florent Schmitt composed
in the modern style for the time. Moritz Moszkowski's piano works
were known for their virtuosity and romanticism.
11) 69401 Czardas and Shadow Dance, by MacDowell p/b Frederic Dixon.
Edward MacDowell is probably one of the most underrated composers.
Known primarily for one piece, 'To A Wild Rose' from his Woodland
Sketches, he was so much more than this singular piece. There are
a number of his compositions on Ampico, two of which are real
"showpieces": 56814 Concert Etude and 62943 Polonaise.
Many of these titles have never been recut before or have not been
available in a very long time. All rolls are A coded except for
69401 which is B coded.
