Rebuilding Nickelodeon Xylophone

I am rebuilding the 22-note Deagan Xylophone in my Western Electric
Selectra.  It has suffered a poor rebuild.  What material was used to
cover the pneumatics when new?  I see signs of both old leather and
cloth.  What is the material of choice today?
