Seek Wurlitzer R Residence Organ Roll Catalogs
By Richard Cole

I am new to this forum. I recently purchased one of Fred Beeks'
versions of the Wurlitzer "R" organ roll player. I had previously
been generously given one of the sets of re-cut rolls. The player
unit has been completed (parts were missing) and it is now playing
very nicely on my Wurlitzer organ.

Unfortunately, the re-cut rolls bear typewritten labels which carry
only the organists' surnames.

Does anyone have an original roll catalogue? I do have Dave Junchen's
Wurlitzer book and have managed to identify many of the organists but
the catalogues printed in this book are far from complete.

Does anyone have their own lists of "R" rolls, or "RJ" rolls with the
full names?

I know, for example, that there are two "Gibson" names on the list,
Archer Gibson and James Gibson. Which is which? Some rolls are very
obviously Archer Gibson as his distinctive playing style is easily
recognised. Others are not so definite.

Any help gratefully received.

Richard Cole

[ Organ Man Builds His Last Replica Player Unit
 [
[ On April 11th [1980], Reno organ man Fred Beeks took one of
[ his Wurlitzer Replica Style "R" roll players, number nine in his
[ production list of the units, to Binghamton, New York, to install
[ on the Link 3/17 pipe organ in Roberson Center. It may be the final
 [ one he will construct.
[ "This will probably be the last one I will do," he said. "I built
[ it for Mr. Ed Link. It is a thrill to have built one for such a
[ famous man, who himself used to build roll players."
[ Beeks also noted that "after Binghamton, my wife Eva is headed for
[ England on the Queen Elizabeth II with the last two complete sets
[ of Wurlitzer "R" rolls. They are destined for a museum there.
[ No doubt they will be heard by some of the ATOS convention-goers
 [ in July," he concluded.
 [
[ These original roll labels are 3" x 3.25", with tiny printing.
