Davrainville Barrel Organs Registery
By Robert Hough

A research project on existing instruments

I am seeking to create a register of all known Davrainville barrel
organs, which will form part of an article I am writing for an
international journal. So any assistance or information would be
most welcome.

From research work already undertaken some years ago by Frank Metzler
and also Roy Ison, it would indicate that around 22 such barrel organs
have been identified. Most of these are fusee-wound mechanism but only
two, so far, are weight driven. I am fortunate in having a 32-key weight
driven, example number 542 dated 1834.

Writing to museums, where some of these instruments are housed, can be
successful but not always, so I thought appealing to a wider audience
would be a sensible move.

Details requested include the serial number, date, number of keys,
fusee or weight driven, length and diameter of barrels and if possible,
details of the music pinned.

Quite a big ask but this I believe is a very worthwhile project as
little has been documented about France's finest maker of clockwork
organs. So far I have some details on the following barrel organs but
this is incomplete hence the request through MMD.

Serial numbers and dates:

7 - 1813,
10 - (no date or details),
25 - 1814,
222 - 1821,
290 - 1824,
317 - 1825,
387 - 1827,
402 - (no date, located in the Hermitage Museum),
493 - 1831,
498 - 1838 (no other details),
542 - 1834,
582 - 1836,
603 - 1836,
657 - (no details),
875 - 1849,
893 - 1850.
and last, two instruments dated 1820 and 1842 with no serial numbers.

Any assistance you can provide with the information requested will
be much appreciated.

Best regards
Robert Hough, Member of the Musical Box Society of Great Britain
