Hide Glue vs. Silicone for Rebuilding a Pianola
By Randolph Herr

It was a year or two back that I wrote in to MMD saying that unless we
are very specific about a product, then we are all blind people feeling
different parts of an elephant and arguing back and forth endlessly.
I was really surprised to read that silicone adhesive ruins a stack
because it is slippery, can't be removed from wood, and prevents hot
glue from sticking. I wish we were told what brand of silicone that is
so we can all avoid it.

For over 40 years I have been working with GE Silicone Rubber Caulking
Type 1. You could probably get by with Type 2, but I like Type 1, the
original formula. This product sticks to wood perfectly, and if you
want to remove it, just rubbing it with your finger causes it to roll
up and come off the wood 100%. In fact, the wood is even cleaner than
when you started because the silicone pulls all the dust and dirt from
the wood pores, not that there should have been any to start with.

It never gets hard under any circumstances, and it is certainly not
slippery, and I use it on the bottom of objects that I do not want to
slide on a table or floor. (After applying a little to the bottom of
an object, place it down on a piece of wax paper atop a level surface
and let it dry overnight.)
