Introduction
By Bruce Hannover
Greetings from Sunny South Florida. Formerly a resident of the Chicago suburbs, (left there in 1972), I am currently employed as Head Stage Electrician at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Ft. Lauderdale. I have held that post since final phases of construction six years ago. Prior to that venue, I was Head Electrician at the Sunrise Musical Theatre, also in metro Ft. Lauderdale. Many, many years ago, I was a member of the Joliet Area Theatre Organ Enthusiasts, working on the 4m/ (then)21r Barton Theatre Pipe Organ installed therein. It seems that I've never been able to get out of the theatres.
I'm married to a lovely Irish lass named Regina Clancy and have two children, Victoria, age 12, and Kyle, age 7. They really enjoyed hearing me attempt to play the Barton in the Al Ringling Theatre in Baraboo, Wisconsin on our vacation this past summer. The band organs at the Circus World Museum were a hit also.
About 25 years ago, I purchased a pipe organ and a player piano while living at home and working during summer breaks from college. The pipe organ is still in my parents' home outside Chicago (although it's seriously for sale) and the Gulbransen Player Piano is presently enroute to Florida. It is completely untouched from its original condition. I intend to restore it completely and carefully upon its arrival here. I have access to fine technicians, through my theatre connections, and will have one of them go over the "piano" section of the instrument. Being somewhat mechanical-minded, I hope to restore the "player" part myself.
It is in this hope that I have sought out being added to the Automatic Musical Instrument Mailing List. I intend to quietly observe all postings that apply to my Gulbransen, and maybe even ask a question or two. I hope that all of the more seasoned "pros" out there will join me in my fondness and dedication to my Gulbransen.
In the meantime, if I can be of any help, regarding Theatre and Stagecraft, please feel free to contact me as well.
