Gulbransen Valves

This is my second visit to your site. Thanks for maintaining it.
Here's a question: I am rebuilding a Gulbransen Player Piano. All is proceeding smoothly. As Reblitz and Player Piano Supply have suggested, I have sawn the trunk into three sections. I have recovered the pneumatics and installed new pouches and valve discs with new leather facings. Now, here's the point:
I am a little concerned with the amount of valve travel that is optimum. I have a good "dish" on the pouches and the valves all move up and down quite nicely. However I am wondering if I really need the paper rings that some sources suggest that I use under the wooden valve rings on the deck surface. How much travel is appropriate? There is a definite "thunk" as the lower valve facing hits the brass seat, and at least 3/32-inch travel to the point at which the wooden ring would be after gluing without the blotter paper ring. If the ring is necessary, why wouldn't Durrell Armstrong at PPS Co. send it in the rebuild kit? Any thoughts? Thanks,
