In years of working on pipe organs (mostly theatre organs), I've found
that zephyr pouches are usually in worse condition than leather ones.

The skin, being very thin, seems to dry and get as brittle as old
paper, in addition to the face that, at least in the San Francisco Bay
area, moths seems to love zephyr.  I've never tried to 'rescue' any
pouch, but most of the zephyr I've come in contact with wouldn't have
been a candidate for 'rescuing' anyway.
