Horace Waters Grand Piano
By George Bartlett

By the Pierce Piano Atlas it looks like your grand was made about 1917,
if it was built in the Horace Waters factory, and not by Janssen, who
also made pianos for Horace Waters.

I also have a grand piano made by Horace Waters and the number goes
back to 65024. I have had the case refinished and I restrung the bass.
The piano is very well constructed and its bass resonates a very rich
powerful tone. The high treble has a good singing quality, that proba-
bly could be improved if the agrafes didn't go all the way to the high
treble.

The action of the one I own was made by Wessel, Nickel & Gross. These
guys once worked for Steinway in the latter 1800s but branched into
their own business. Generally these pianos were very heavy and very
well built. If you care to discuss these pianos further, please feel
free to write me.
