QRS 3226 "The Farmer Took Another Load Away!"
By Wayne Stahnke

A short time ago I transcribed Automatic Music Roll No. A-1146 and
made it available to subscribers of the MMD [990314 MMDigest]. Several
people have pointed out that the arrangements on that roll, issued in
late 1925, sound a great deal like the work of J. Lawrence Cook, and
there has been speculation that this could be explained if at least
some of the Automatic rolls were derived from QRS masters, since J.
Lawrence Cook worked for QRS during the mid-'20s.

Our intrepid editor, Robbie Rhodes, located a copy of QRS Roll No.
3226, "The Farmer Took Another Load Away! Hay! Hay!" and provided
it to me for scanning. That title is the eighth selection on A-1146.
I scanned the roll, and the reconstructed master roll is available to
all interested parties through the MMD Archives. Perhaps Robbie can be
of further help and insert a note here about just how to retrieve it.

I hope that someone with the appropriate training will examine both QRS
3226 and Automatic A-1146 and publish a note on the MMD explaining just
what was done to make the particular transfer under discussion, and
perhaps also give suggestions for what the underlying approach may have
been.
