What is a Recording? What is a Record?
By John A. Tuttle

Hi All, What constitutes a 'recording' is indeed an interesting
question. In my opinion, a standard 88-note piano roll is actually
less accurate than sheet music because it contains no information about
the dynamics of the music. So, it is not a recording. It is, in fact,
a representation of the musical notation without the dynamics.

Conversely, reproducing rolls are recordings because they have encoded
dynamics.

Musically,

John A. Tuttle
