Bank Currency Conversion Fees
By John Spradley

As I export control cable and housing (bicycle brake cable) to the
animatronics industry, I am always exploring ways to receive money.

Bank of America charges me $10 for incoming wire transfers. I do not
know (and have never asked) what the sender is charged. Another local
bank I use charged me $30. It is a quick and easy way to receive
money.

My worst case was from the U.K. A well-known company sent a check
drawn on a U.K. bank, sent by surface mail! I then had to put it in
my bank for 'collection', with a fee charged. It took over four months
to get my money. Now I specify how I want to get paid.

The most efficient way was suggested by a supplier in Canada. He
had an account with Bank of America just for such purposes. At his
suggestion I went to my local branch and deposited money direct to his
account. From the time he e-mailed me his account number till he
verified the deposit was less than an hour. Shop for a bank with
foreign branches.

Is there a web-site for comparing banking services? I see a great
business opportunity for such a site. My limited knowledge has been
greatly enhanced by introducing myself to the local banker, and sending
flowers to tellers who have suggested things. I would love to compare
banks on-line.
