Sticking Tuning Pins
By Steve Bentley

I have a problem with "jumping" tuning pins. I have not tuned the
piano for the last three years. I have had the temperature higher
than I used to have and I believe the wood has "dried" too much.

What I find now is the pins are harder to break loose and a cracking
noise is heard each time. Just when the string is nearly on pitch and
a little more adjustment is needed, say, coming down on the tension,
the "crack" is heard again with the result it lets off too much -- it
won't "fine tune".

I have lowered the heat in the room (2 days) and I am trying to
increase the humidity, with a small wet towel, etc. I am open for
suggestions and procedures.
