Total Production of Player Pianos
By John A. Tuttle

Hi All -- "How many pneumatic player pianos are there?"
Seems like a simple enough question ... Wrong!

I've checked around -- no one knows! Estimates range from 450,000 to
3 million. How can we find out? Any ideas?

(I heard from one moving company that the ratio of regular pianos to
player pianos is 2000:1. They claim to have moved over 7,000 pianos
in the Columbus, Ohio area in the past ten years or so.)

(And here's a funny: When I went to "Ask Jeeves" search engine,
guess which web site kept coming up as a place where the answer could
be found? You guessed it: Player-Care! You'd think I would know --
I don't!)

Musically,

John A. Tuttle

[ See "Player Piano Treasury", by Harvey Roehl, page 43: The
[ U.S. Department of Commerce estimated that total production
[ of player pianos through 1935 was about 2,500,000 units. But
 [ what of the post-war revival? ;-) -- Robbie
