Replacement Gear Motor for Kimball Player Piano
By Robbie Rhodes

In 010712 MMDigest Mr. Carl Borg, of Dosjebro Sweden, writes that the
electric music roll drive motor of his Kimball piano has failed and
he asks where to find spare parts.

Several similar questions were published in MMD but I could find no
satisfactory replies for Mr. Borg. John Tuttle noted (990312 MMD)
that "Kimball changed the motor housing (and perhaps everything inside)
at least three times that I know of for certain."

Evidently the motors weren't very reliable, so surely Mr. Borg is not
the only owner of a failed Kimball piano. Could a kit with a new motor
of good quality be offered to repair these pianos? What would it cost?
Or could the old motor and gears be rebuilt economically?

Would the value of the piano after repairs be any more than the cost
of the repairs? (That's the same situation as the decision to repair
an old automobile.)
