Mechanical Music at Smithsonian Institution
By Andy Struble

I am writing with a question about how many working mechanical
instruments are displayed in the various Smithsonian collections?
I was there a few years back, saw and heard the Ampico and Welte,
saw only a couple cylinder music boxes, and also gazed longingly
to imagine the Art Case Duo-Art playing to show just how far superior
it could be to the Yamaha (based on totally correct restoration,
of course).

So as far as reproducing and player pianos, nickelodeons and
orchestrions and any large fair or dance organs, what is on display,
and how much of it works?

Also wondering if we'll ever hear the little Wurlitzer theater organ
from Lowell Ayars estate?
