If I were you, I would get a second opinion about your bailment
liability.  The answers given sounded a little too glib.

The law varies from state to state, and there could be a specific
New York statute, but...  (I claim no expertise in this area of the
law, but the advice you got does not sound like anything I recall
from law school.)  Check it out.
