Finding Leaks in Pipe Organs
By Vic Searle

Happy holidays to all MMD'ers. I've been using my spare time
(which is all I have here in the nursing home) building a John Smith
busker organ in my cell.

On the John Smith page on the Internet, there have been a number
of tips about tracing leaks, involving buying a stethoscope, or
jerry-rigging one out of aquarium plastic hose etc. I was surprised
that nobody ever mentioned the easiest and most accurate way.

In my active career, I built 17 pipe organs and 12 band organs and
I've never found a leak that I couldn't trace. I just light a stick
of incense, the green sticks that are used on Buddhist altars here
in Japan. The tip glows brightly at the faintest leak.

I don't know how incense is sold overseas, but it's available
everywhere here. Give it a try and have an airtight New Year!
