Mechanical Music in India

In answer to Alan Whytock's question about the HMV factory in India,
it was at a place called Dum Dum (like the bullet).  I would have to
seriously look at a map to tell you exactly where it is.  I'm also not
sure when they set up this factory; all the discs I have from there
were produced during WW2 period.

Interestingly enough, the pressings were far superior to the UK
production, much more like the German equivalent with smooth noise free
surfaces.  The Hayes plant in UK had a terrible method of pouring some
kind of graphite powder into the mix to supposedly make them last
longer or keep the needles sharp, never mind about the sound quality!
