Several years ago marked the end of an era for me.  Many recordings of
mechanical music were being offered by Terry Hathaway.  His web site of
historical data and specifications and audio recordings was unparalleled
in the history of automatic music.  Today, we have the distant effects
of his influence and recordings available through Chris Carlisle, and
the historical information that was gleaned from those years.

At this time, many great collections own these instruments that were
recorded, but we are left with nothing but a quick chance at possibly
viewing one or two instruments in a fleeting glimpse.  In other words,
these wonderful instruments remain hidden from the public in the bowls
of private collections.

During the time Terry Hathaway offered these recordings, it was
possible to hear of the musical magic that these machines are capable
of.  But now, things have dried up and there is nothing left accept for
the fortunate people who own one of these machines.

How can the youth of America learn of the magic of mechanical music if
these machines remain hidden from view to the majority of the public?

Collections such as San Sylmar refuse to produce any recordings of
their magnificent orchestrions.

How then can the future continue with the interest in this field?
