Mechanical Music in the Movies
By Jere DeBacker

I loved the YouTube video of the Melville Clark Player Piano at
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDdQHo3kEzU It is actually an
Apollophone. An Apollophone player piano was also used in the 1962
movie "The Music Man". Does anyone know if this is the same piano?

While we're on the subject of player pianos in the movies, here's
a great clip of a Steinway Duo-Art in action, sent to me by Bill
Pixley.

  http://youtube.com/watch?v=sOMcpbSXcZk "Midnight Mystery"
In this scene Ivan Lebedeff (as Mischa) plays a piano roll so
the dinner guests think his hands are busy on the keys. He
chooses the Duo-Art recording of Rudolph Ganz playing "Liebestraum"
(Dream of Love) by Franz Liszt. This allows him to make out with
Rita La Roy (as Madeline Austen).
