USPS Media Mail
By Craig Smith

[ Ref. 080218 MMDigest, "FS Free: MBS Magazines"

Hi, Just a heads up on the new mailing rules. I was selling some
used magazines in e-Bay recently and I decided to check the mailing
rules. This is an excerpt from the USPS web site on Media Mail.

  http://www.usps.com/rates/media-mail-rates.htm

"Media Mail is used for books, film, manuscripts, printed music,
printed test materials, sound recordings, play scripts, printed
educational charts, loose-leaf pages and binders consisting of
medical information, videotapes, and computer-recorded media like
CDs and diskettes. Media Mail cannot contain advertising."

Note the last sentence: *no advertising*

So my box of "Fine Woodworking" magazines has to go Parcel Post or
Priority Mail because they have display ads as well as classified
advertising. "Shop Notes" magazines can go Media Mail because they
are totally paid by the subscribers and have no ads whatsoever.
The MBSI periodicals contain advertising so they cannot be posted
at Media Mail rates. (Piano rolls still qualify.)

Regards
Craig Smith
