Leather Nuts Cause Corrosion of Metal Valve Stems
By Don Teach

Who has a solution to stop the corroding of metal valve stems caused
by today's tanning process on leather nuts? I am seeing more valve
stems corroded by the leather than ever on pianos rebuilt during the
last 20 years or so. Even the ones rebuilt recently have this
corrosion.

I have started using nuts made of nylon. I have tried soaking leather
nuts in shellac or lacquer but that doesn't seem to stop the problem.
