Pauline Alpert - Duo-Art Piano Roll Artist
By Gordon Stelter

I have read that Aeolian asked Pauline to leave out some notes when
recording for them, as her rolls were being advertised as "Hand-Played"
and they felt that this would be hard for the public to believe if she
played as she normally played.

Evidence for this can be heard by comparing her Duo-Art recording of
"Magnolia" (nicely presented on YouTube, on a well-restored Weber) and
her Victor recording of the same (also on YouTube although, alas, from
a horribly worn record). Both versions sound about the same until the
last chorus, during which she really "cuts loose" on the phonograph
record. (I do wish someone would post a better-sounding version of
this!)
