Piano Rolls I Hate
By David Dewey

Luke Myers wrote of his dislike of "The Entertainer" and "Dueling
Banjos" [160725 MMDigest]. Well, the rolls I don't like are ones that
don't play well. Some classical rolls are, quite simply, _boring._
Some rolls just don't track well, or are mis-punched. Those are the
ones I don't appreciate! :)

As for "The Entertainer", it is one of my favorite Joplin numbers.
What I don't like is when it is played too fast, or "hawkeyed" up,
which most folks seem to like to do.

"Dueling Banjos" on a piano? What part of Banjo & Piano is missing
in this combination? :)

As for "scrolls," "rolls" and "tune sheets," it's the "Modern World,"
Luke. I have learned that many folks do not know how to use proper
grammar, correct words (there, their, they're, etc.) and I just have
to let it go, "Me and my Friends" (another pet peeve of mine). You
know? Uh, like, you know...

So, I've lost track -- do you now have a functioning player? I'm
hoping so!  Too bad you are so far away from Northern California;
I have a player or two (upright, 88-note stuff) and parts for quite
a few that are available _very_ reasonably (as in the word "Free").
One, I think, can be made playable very easily, although one should
go through the keys and the action first.

Oh, and as far as Laurel & Hardy's player piano, ya gotta have
provenance -- well-documented. I once helped refinish what was
reportedly Mae West's dressing room grand, but the provenance had
been lost, so we could only sell it as a refinished grand. That's
probably a loss of $5k to $10K!
