In reply to John Cowles inquiry [171127 MMDigest] about hearing
"Bamboula, Danse des Negres" as performed on the 1858 Lecoultre keywind
box, formerly in the collection of the late Olin Tillotson, I'm
attaching to this post a link to a recording made back in 2012 which
was kindly forwarded to me at the museum.  It is not a high-end
recording and it might be running just a tad fast but, as mentioned,
it is a fabulous musicological document from just four years after
Gottschalk wrote and performed it in France.

For those who like coin-op devices from the early 1900's, in
particular upright slots with music below, this is the other arena
where one usually finds Swiss-made musical movements from Mermod Freres
or Paillard et Cie., that feature those crazy syncopated rhythms!
