Seeburg K & KT Suction Reservoir & Pump Speed
By Kermit Hobbs

I'm restoring a Seeburg KT orchestrion that was modified many years
ago. Someone has added a snare drum and a bass drum with cymbal and
tympani. I figure this would make it approximately equivalent to a KT
Special in terms of the suction demand to power the all instruments.

The box-type pump was turning 260 rpm when I got it, way more than it
should normally. Now, when I open the distribution box, I find three
springs inside the reservoir, apparently put there to prevent the spill
valve from losing the increased suction.

I haven't decided yet whether to try to keep the added instruments or
to try to take it back to its original configuration. What I want to
know at this point is how many springs should be in the reservoir for
proper operation of a "stock" KT? Also, how many springs should be
required for a KT Special? Any ideas, anyone?

Thanks,
Kermit Hobbs
