Motor For Gulbransen Recordo in New Zealand
By Jase Haysom

The consumer power distribution system in Australia (and I believe
New Zealand also) is three phase 240 VAC line to neutral at 50 Hz.
Domestically, a single line to neutral phase is available at the
general purpose outlets, so plug-in devices (e.g., an electric jug)
are rated at 240 VAC.

Houses may also have a second phase connection (the phases differ by
120 degrees, not 180). The voltage between the two phases is 415 VAC.
Thus heavy power devices such as an electric stove or a hot water
system can run off 415 VAC. In a commercial installation the three
phases may be available and thus a dinkum 3 phase 415 VAC supply is
available for heavy machinery.
