Hello, All,  So now it becomes rather obvious why gamme numbers were
thought to refer to a particular set of tunes on a cylinder box.  Two 
boxes with the same set of tunes were found to have the same gamme
number.  So it seems reasonable (and true) that the gamme numbers
referred to the selection of tunes.

But, of course, that combination of tunes would have required a
particular combination of tuned teeth on the comb (or a subset of that
combination).  Thus, the gamme number (a particular combination of tuned
teeth on the comb) would always be the same for a given set of tunes.

However, a comb of a given gamme number (combination of tuned teeth)
could probably be used for many other combinations of tunes as long as
it contained all the required tuned teeth.  Complicated, but quite
reasonable.  Thanks for the clarification.
