Hide Glue & Fish Glue
By Andy Taylor

This subject has been touched on hundreds of times. Fish glue is good
for installing pouches, and some valve facings. Hot glue is still best
for pneumatics and gluing them to the deck.

I have seen a buffet that is over 170 years old, and the hot glue is
holding tightly. The original builders knew what was best when the
player actions were made. Until we know the long term effects of the
modern glues (I challenge anyone to find anything as good as hot glue)
I think we should refrain from using anything else on this application.

In a wood to wood joint that has been broken, crazy glue is really good
for broken shanks and spot repairs that never have to come apart again.
Plastic glue (PVC-E) is great for dissimilar pieces such as leather to
metal. A very similar substitute for this would be "Aleene's Tacky
Glue" available at Wal-Mart.

A good rule of thumb for this is that "every time you try to save 15
minuets, it will cost you two hours."

White glues are totally useless in piano repair. The joint is ugly,
much weaker than hot glue, and has been known to eventually slip out
of alignment over time. How do I know this? I made the same mistake
myself, and was exceedingly sorry for it later!
